N. Merrick schools finish budget, community to vote

John Fried, 86, was Camp Ave. principal

John Fried, of Frederick, Md., a longtime principal of Camp Avenue Elementary School in North Merrick, died on Feb. 28 in Wilmington, N.C., after a long illness. He was 86 years old. more

Nassau County police gathered Monday afternoon on Stevens Avenue in North Merrick after receiving a report that a man had threatened his wife with a gun inside their home. A police spokesman said the report proved to be incorrect.

In her years at Kennedy High School in Bellmore, Merokean Sara Rosenzweig grew accustomed to finishing first among Cougar cross-country and track runners. Ambulances sat Thursday afternoon outside Camp Avenue School in North Merrick. A boiler in the school leaked "black smoke," according to the North Merrick School District. School officials called 911 "as a precaution," said North Merrick Superintendent David Feller.

15 at Camp Ave exposed to ‘black smoke,’ taken to hospital

Ambulances rushed one teacher and 14 students Thursday afternoon from Camp Avenue School in North Merrick to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow due to possible carbon monoxide poisoning. All 15 were evaluated at the hospital and released, according to NUMC spokeswoman Shelly Lotenberg. more
