The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District swim team, the Sharks, recently took part in the Long Beach Polar Bear Super Bowl Sunday Splash to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Their efforts, combined with support from their families, friends and teachers, enabled them to raise more than $3,300 for the cause. more

On Sept. 27, 2005, Jill and Craig Levine faced the unthinkable. Their 9-year-old son Robbie was rounding the bases during a Merrick Little League practice at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School in Merrick when he suddenly collapsed at home plate. He stopped breathing, and had no pulse. Craig, an oral surgeon trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, gave his son CPR for five long, terrifying minutes until a paramedic arrived with a defibrillator and administered electric-shock treatment. The Kennedy High School girls’ soccer team came together on Sept. 17 in support of Children’s Cancer Awareness Month. After an early-morning practice, all 23 players met at Salon Envy in Merrick and purchased Streaks of Sunshine hair extensions, with proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York. The extensions are $10 each. more

The Long Island International Film Expo, hosted by the Long Island Film/TV Foundation, will return to the Bellmore Movies next week. The 14th annual film festival will kick off with a preview night on Thursday, July 7, and an opening night party on Friday, July 8, at 5 p.m. for all ticket holders. more
