Wasting no time in Island Park kindergarten The new school year may have just begun, but kindergartners in Denise Benedetto’s class at Francis X. Hegarty School in Island Park already are learning new ways to build their language arts skills. During a recent lesson, Mrs. Benedetto helped students practice writing the alphabet and developing sentences. Teachers incorporate a 30-minute daily Fundations lesson into their language arts classroom instruction. Fundations lessons focus on carefully sequenced skills that include print knowledge, alphabet awareness, phonological awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency and spelling.
