Thomas Crotty stood and stared for a moment on Friday at the twisted, rusted, 1,600-pound steel girder in front of the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s Brookside School in North Merrick. “It was very thoughtful of the community and the young people to do this so the day and the people will not be forgotten,” Crotty remarked.

This Sunday, Sept. 26, starting at 9:30 a.m., participants from all over the country and the world will take part in the ninth annual Tunnel to Towers Walk/Run. The event retraces the path that firefighter Stephen Siller, a former Rockville Centre resident, took from the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when he lost his life trying to save others trapped inside the twin towers.

Since October 2002, Rockville Centre residents and the families and friends of those from the community who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 20001 have had a peaceful place to relect on and remember the events of that tragic day.

Retired Navy captain and Rockville Centre resident Christopher Boylan and his wife, Elizabeth, were among the invited guests aboard the USS New York for a formal shipboard commissioning on Nov. 7 that honored both those who perished on Sept. 11, 2001 as well as those who survived. The event was planned to forge an enduring alliance between the people of New York and the ship and her crew.
