On May 9, Calhoun High School rededicated its baseball diamond as the Joe Corea Field, named for the Colts’ legendary baseball coach of 46 years. Corea, now 71 and retired, took part in the ceremony with his family and many from the Calhoun community.

Hundreds of people, most of them students, came together on Saturday, April 24, at Calhoun High School for Relay For Life, the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event. Forty-six teams of people collected more than $77,000, according to the ACS. more

Craig Levine, a Merrick oral surgeon, leapt as he crossed the finish line of the 10th Annual Robbie’s Run, the Merrick 5K his family’s foundation held on April 26 at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School, to tap an overhanging photo of his late son, Robbie. On Sept. 27, 2005, Robbie died suddenly at the age of 9 when he his heart stopped while he was running the bases of the Lakeside baseball field visible in the background. Craig tried giving CPR to his son, but there was no AED on hand. Craig and his wife, Jill, founded Forever 9: The Robbie Levine Foundation, which since 2006 has organized the annual Robbie’s Run 5K fundraiser, to purchase AEDs for schools and youth ball fields and provide classes in CPR.

They came from Nassau and Suffolk counties, New York City, upstate New York — even Virginia. Most of the hundreds of runners in the 10th Annual Robbie’s Run, however, came from Merrick. more

State Farm donated $25,000 on March 26 to the Community Parent Center, a Bellmore-Merrick nonprofit organization that supports parents and families with children in kindergarten to 12th grade, for its “Drive in the Safe Lane” program at Calhoun, Kennedy and Mepham high schools. more
