The old last-day-of-school chorus had a melancholy ring to it this year in Baldwin, as two schools — 83-year-old Shubert Elementary and 59-year-old Milburn Elementary School — dismissed their students for the last time.

The Valley Stream Target store is scheduled to undergo a remodeling project beginning in May that will cause the location to be closed for six months. The store’s last day of business before construction begins will be April 29.

On March 29, Minneapolis-based electronics retailer Best Buy released its financial results for 2012 and revealed a net loss of $1.7 billion. The shortfall will reverberate throughout the retailer’s holdings, prompting changes at the corporate level and the closing of 50 Best Buy stores across the country. Best Buy has a store in Baldwin — as well as in nearby Valley Stream and Westbury — but the fates of those stores have yet to be determined.

One week after the Baldwin Board of Education’s Facilities Review Task Force recommended the closure of two of the district’s elementary schools, Superintendent Dr. James Mapes weighed in with his recommendations to the board. They included closing the Shubert and Milburn schools and halving Baldwin’s kindergarten program, among other belt-tightening measures.

Customers of Citibank’s Station Plaza branch, at 41 Front St., learned last week that it will close on April 27 and that their accounts will automatically be transferred to the Citibank branch at 297 Merrick Road. Despite the “seamless process” promised in a letter signed by Angel Benitez, the Station Plaza branch manager, many of the bank’s customers say they are not happy about the news, and they hope to do something about it.

By the end of the week, all Gunther Elementary School students will know what school they will attend next September. Though the students will no longer spend their days learning and bonding at Gunther, their legacy will be a permanent one left on the school. That was the hope that Principal Marie Testa had when the school developed the idea to literally mark the building’s walls with a lasting memory.
