I wouldn’t go so far as to call Howard Gardner a prophet, but way back in 1993, he sure predicted the chaotic politics that are roiling our public education system these days.

They all had different ways to say it, but the message was clear: opt out of Common Core tests. Two teachers, two administrators and a parent told the more than 300 people at Levittown Hall in Hicksville that the only way to send a message to Gov. Andrew Cuomo was to refuse to let their children take the third through eighth grade English language arts and math tests in April.

The Seaford School district has increased its fund balance from 2.6 percent to 4 percent, from $1.58 million to $2.5 million. Alexandria Battaglia, an external auditor from R.S. Abrams & Company, told Seaford Board of Education members at the Oct. 2 school board meeting that while the unassigned fund balance was now at the legal limit and other school reserves have increased, additional money is needed in designated reserve funds in order to cover the school district’s $79.4 million liability.
