Rockaway Avenue is at the heart of Valley Stream’s business district, and usually sees lots of shoppers and drivers on the weekends. But last Saturday, Rockaway Avenue had its busiest day of the year, during the second annual Valley Stream Community Fest.

If you were part of the massive crowd that attended the Valley Stream Community Fest on Sept. 29, you probably noticed a few things: a host of business and community groups up and down Rockaway Avenue, a store or two that you didn’t know too much about, a lot of neighbors and friends, and the lovely weather.

I’m not going to lie. I’ve been waiting more than five years for Valley Stream to have a street festival, like the one planned for this Saturday. I’ve seen or heard about similar events in Merrick, Bellmore, West Hempstead and East Rockaway, where the Herald has other papers, and was admittedly a little jealous.

On any given day, Rockaway Avenue sees its fair share of action, with people from all over Long Island coming to the Valley Stream business district to shop and dine. But this Saturday looks to be one of the most eventful days in the avenue’s history, when it will be the site of the long-awaited Valley Stream Community Fest.
