Wendy Tepfer, executive director of the Bellmore-Merrick Community Parent Center, was recently honored by the Governor’s Traffic Safety Council for her efforts to create the Driving in the Safe Lane Program, which is now in about half of Nassau County’s 57 high schools. She was joined here recently by Saul Lerner, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s health and athletics director, who helped to create the safe-driving program.

On May 18, 2008, one second forever altered Jacy Good’s life when a tractor-trailer slammed head-on into her family’s station wagon, carrying the then 21-year-old and her parents, Jay and Jean. The truck swerved to avoid a mini-van, driven by an 18-year-old who, according to officials, was engrossed in a cell-phone call. County joins U.N.’s campaign for road safety

Two Nassau County Police officers revved up the motor on a device not much larger than a lawnmower engine. As the machine roared last Wednesday afternoon, the officers used its cutters to slowly peel off the driver’s side door of a badly damaged minivan. No one was inside the van, but students at Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville watched quietly and anxiously as the “Jaws of Life” crushed the car’s metal. more

With the holiday season upon us, we at the Community Parent Center believe it is important for parents to be extra careful when handing over the car keys to their teen drivers. The time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is one of the busiest for travel, and newly licensed teens do not have enough experience to navigate through heavy traffic and winter weather conditions. more
