In a 3-2 decision last Thursday, New York State Appellate Division judges upheld new boundaries drawn by Nassau Republican lawmakers for the county’s 19 legislative districts. If the state Court of Appeals rules in favor of the Republican plan on Aug. 24, the GOP’s legislative map will reshape a number of districts, including those covering the Five Towns, Elmont, Baldwin and Merrick-Bellmore.

Supreme Court Justice Steven M. Jaeger ruled on July 21 that the Nassau County redistricting plan — which was crafted by the county attorney’s office at the suggestion of Peter Schmitt, a Republican who represents the 12th Legislative District — does not apply to the 2011 election. Jaeger went on to say that 2013 would be the earliest the Nassau redistricting plan could be put into use.

FBI agents raided a house on Carley Court in Merrick on the morning of July 19. Special agent Jim Margolin of the FBI’s New York field office confirmed that the raid was part of a nationwide computer-hacking investigation. While evidence was seized from the house, no arrests were made, he said.
