The Chamber of Commerce of the Bellmores hosted its 16th annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Extravaganza last Friday. Hundreds of local folks stopped by Bellmore Village to watch the tree lighting and take horse-and-carriage rides. Families and friends gathered to take in the carolers and enjoy the night over cups of hot chocolate. Boys and girls also got the chance to meet Santa Claus and tell him what they want for Christmas. more

Parents of children in Gunther Elementary School’s class of 2013 gathered on Wednesday after the announcement that their school would likely close at the end of this school year. Anger and sadness resonated through the group. The Bellmores marked Veterans Day with two ceremonies on Nov. 11. Members of American Legion Post No. 948 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2770 held the ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park off Bedford Avenue in Bellmore Village. North Bellmore American Legion Post No. 1749 hosted its annual Veterans Day ceremony at the monument in front of Newbridge Road Elementary School. more

Calhoun Colts goalie Alissa Battaglia saved 19 shots on goal in the Class AA final Wednesday night, but the MacArthur Generals found the back of the net three times in their shutout victory. The 3-0 loss ended the Colts’ undefeated season, but coach Lori Biscardi said she was proud of how far her team came — knocking off top-seeded Farmingdale en route to the championship and boasting the second-leading scorer in the county –– Kristina Gandolfo, who netted 21 goals this fall. more
