Special Sanitary District 6, which is based in West Hempstead, has a 2011 tax rate of 63.23 per $100,000 — the highest of any of the Town of Hempstead’s five sanitary districts. Sanitary District 6 is also the largest special district in the state, and employs nearly 150 workers.
