Windows were smashed and glass covered the sidewalk at the vacant stores on Gibson Boulevard last weekend, evidence of yet another act of vandalism at the blighted property. The damage was reported early Saturday morning by village code enforcement and auxiliary police officers. more

The Sign For Marie Roscher Corner was unveiled before family, friends, village and school officials on June 17. Roscher was a crossing guard at the intersection of Rockaway Avenue, Horton Avenue and Horton Road for 30 years.

Marie Roscher didn’t think she would be a crossing guard for long, according to her daughter, Kathleen. When she returned from the corner of Rockaway Avenue, Horton Avenue and Horton Road on her first day of work, she told her husband she didn’t think she could handle the job. “She said it wasn’t for her,” Kathleen Roscher said. more

For nearly two decades, the 5th Precinct’s Problem Oriented Policing unit has generally consisted of a group of four officers, who the community has become comfortable working closely with and, most importantly, trusted. That relationship changed severely last Monday, when three of the unit’s officers were reassigned to the 5th Precinct’s patrol unit, in compliance with a plan created by County Executive Ed Mangano to reduce the county’s costs and prevent further tax increases. more
