In a surprise statement that came at the end of the Board of Education organizational meeting on July 5, school board President Liz Dion announced that the board and Superintendent Dr. William Johnson have reached agreement on a new four-year contract for him that includes no salary increases over its term and increases his contributions toward health care benefits. In a departure from previous contracts, the new contract does not contain a so-called “evergreen” clause that causes it to automatically renew at the end of each year.

For nearly two decades, the 5th Precinct’s Problem Oriented Policing Unit has generally consisted of a group of four officers, who the community has become comfortable working closely with and, most importantly, trusted. That relationship changed severely last Monday, when three of the unit’s officers were relocated to the 5th Precinct’s patrol unit, in compliance with a plan created by County Executive Ed Mangano to reduce the county’s costs and prevent further tax increases.
