Patricia Locurcio, secretary to the West Hempstead Chamber of Commerce for more than eight years and a very active West Hempstead volunteer, has a very simple request. “I need a van,” said Locurcio, who has multiple sclerosis and a 2006 Dodge Caravan that she says is falling apart. “And I don’t have the money to afford another one.”

Andrea Stottler has found prom ball gowns on the stoop of her Wantagh home nearly everyday since February. After she posted on the Wantagh Mommas Facebook page that she and other members of the Lions Club were collecting dresses so that teens in need had something to wear to their proms, she began finding dozens of colorful garments hung over her doorway when she got home from work.

Whether it is recycling old eyeglasses or hosting food drives, the Lions Club of Valley Stream has been active in the community for 69 years as of January. When Beverly Krouse went to her eye doctor in 2008, she was told she had cataracts and was referred to a specialist in Queens. The specialist then told Krouse, “This looks like it’s more than just cataracts,” and diagnosed her with Fuch’s endothelial dystrophy — a genetic condition that causes the cornea to swell, resulting in reduced vision.
