Sixteen-year-old Sean Flynn, of Bellmore, called all 263 contacts on his cell phone on the afternoon of June 26, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 that the Constitution guarantees the right to gay marriage.
He made the calls in rapid-fire succession. “Marriage equality is legal!” Flynn yelled into the phone. “Woohoo!” Then he moved to the next number, again and again, for two and a half hours.
He was ecstatic, he said.

Bellmore-based Pride for Youth, a leader in HIV prevention on Long Island since 1993, has launched a ground-breaking PrEP Assessment and Monitoring Program for young gay and bisexual (trans-inclusive) men, through age 30. Supported by a grant from the New York State Department of Health, the program is the first of its kind on Long Island.

All Nassau County parks and outdoor ice rinks would close at 4 p.m. on Monday and re-open when the weather allows, announced County Executive Ed Mangano. All regularly scheduled county events on Monday evening and throughout Tuesday are cancelled, according to a county news release. The county aquatic center in East Meadow and rifle range in Uniondale are also slated to close at 4 p.m. The Nassau County Correctional Center will stop visiting hours from noon on Monday and to Thursday morning.

A drug take-back event sponsored by the Bellmore-Merrick Community Parent Center, the Central High School District and the Heroin Task Force on Sept. 27 yielded more than 200 pounds of medications, representing hundreds, if not thousands, of the opioid prescription pain pills that a growing number of teenagers are abusing, according to Wendy Tepfer, the Parent Center’s executive director.
