Truck Day is an annual tradition for Valley Stream’s nursery school students to come out and check out the rigs they typically only get to play with in toy size.

When Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre (HERJC) started its nursery school in 1969, there were only two classes. Since then it has increased in size, extended hours, and the amount of programs that are offered. Having added programs such as art, music, Jewish Enrichment and Mommy and Me, the nursery school has grown to nearly 200 children, ranging in ages from 10 months to 5 years.

They may not yet have mastered trigonometry, the periodic table of elements or even, in some cases, subtraction, but the kindergarten class of 2011 is undeniably on its way to the academic elite. The last two weeks saw both St. Christopher’s School and the Baldwin Nursery School award capped-and-gowned kiddies diplomas for completing their first full year of school. An occasionally baffled procession of youngsters received their accreditations amicably as flashbulbs popped and eyes got misty. Unsubstantiated reports indicate a great deal of ice cream may have been enjoyed as well.

Citing increasing premiums or possibly no liability coverage for nursery and pre-school classes run by the East R’s Recreation Department, the village board of trustees has decided to discontinue the two programs. Parents criticized the decision at Monday night’s village board meeting — just hours after some of them had attended their children’s Moving Up to Kindergarten ceremonies at the Rec Center.

The Hippo class, led my Miss Terri and Miss Rita of Intercommunity Nursery School, invited the children’s families to join them in a celebration of their “Exploration of Great Artists." The children and their guests had the opportunity to paint icing on cookies, craft paper mosaics, capture still life in drawings and to create pictures on the computer. The students also shared their special art books with the class. It was a morning filled with creativity and fun for all.

Former and current teachers of Grace United Methodist Nursery School shared many memories on March 4 during a celebration for the school’s 40th anniversary. They were joined by past students, parents, directors and church and local officials.

Students at Sacred Heart Elementary School in North Merrick attended their annual Halloween Spooktacular last week. Nursery through second-grade students painted pumpkins, played games and had a "wicked" good time dressed in their Halloween garb.
