It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving weekend without football, and for each of the past 40 years, members of Oceanside High School’s class of 1984 have used the sport to keep in touch and get some light trash talking in. On Saturday, the Turkey Bowl tradition continued, with one former classmate making the trip from California.

Facing reigning Thorp Award winner Charlie McKee, who entered his senior season at Oceanside within striking distance of becoming Nassau County’s all-time leader in passing touchdowns and passing yards, Farmingdale often rushed only three defenders last Friday night and dared the hosts to make things happen on the ground.

Dozens of teachers and hundreds of students participated in OHS' outdoor 9/11 reflection on Friday ahead of the 20th remembrance with a day of special events.
Students helped place miniature American flags adorned with paper flowers around the perimeter of the school, visited with retired FDNY member Dave Williams, whose firetruck is now a 9/11 Memorial on wheels, held a moment of silence near 20 American flags, representing the years since 2001, and viewed the flags of more than 50 countries that also lost citizens on that day.

Two Oceanside High School alumni who studied in the broadcasting class taught by Audrey Miller have been recognized for their films. Jesse Pilnik has been nominated for two NY Emmy Awards, one for Let's Learn NYC (Children/Youth Long Form), and another for Understanding LGBTQ Indentiy: We'Wha (Historical/Cultural Short Form Content).

For 20 years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center, Oceanside has kept its promise to “never forget.” That was evident by the hundreds of residents who marched from Oceanside High School to the Schoolhouse Green to pay tribute to those lost that day.

After an incredibly long school year, Oceanside High School seniors finally had their moment together. Members of the class of 2021 gathered on the football field June 25 and were celebrated for their persistence through the pandemic.

The legalization of the sale and use of recreational marijuana in New York has been met with stiff opposition in the form of opt-outs from local municipalities. In Oceanside, the high school’s youth council made their mark on the conversation by creating signs to run on Nassau Inter-County Express buses to warn county residents about the effects the drug can have on developing brains.

Oceanside High School valedictorian Matthew Friedman and salutatorian Courtney Murphy have adapted to the scholastic challenges that have arisen over the past year. Hybrid schedules and the stresses of applying to colleges and playing varsity sports during a pandemic have not stopped the two from balancing their commitments and finishing at the top of their class.

Oceanside High School senior Miranda Leibstein notched a rare feat when she had her research into cows’ diets published for a second time.
Leibstein translated her love of riding and caring for horses over to another barnyard animal as part of her work with the prestigious University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.

Oceanside High School junior Leah Koeppel and her friends Sara Zacharia and Ally Ferber, of Calhoun High School, have partnered with youth led non-profit Balance Boxes to provide local children with care packages containing healthy snacks and monthly themed toys and school supplies.
