I ran track as an eighth-grader at Grand Avenue Middle School in Bellmore in 2001. I wasn’t a star, but I stuck it out through the spring season and learned how to stay fit for life. I was 14 years old.

Elijah Rutherford was 20 months old when he was diagnosed with a stroke in utero. As he grew up he became cognizant of the limited awareness for his condition and at just seven years old, his idea to share teddy bears with other child stroke victims was the starting point for a non-profit – The Traveling Awareness Bears.

Last summer, the Merrick Madness softball team went on an improbable run, winning the New York State Softball championship in Canastota, N.Y., and advancing to the Eastern Regional Tournament of Champions in Albany, finishing in third place in their bracket.
One year later, the Merrick Madness squad is at it again.

For the protection of motorists, closure of all eastbound travel lanes on Front Street/NY Route 102 between William Street in Hempstead Village and NY Route 24/Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow in the Town of Hempstead, are now in effect and will continue each weekday night for approximately three weeks, weather permitting. Eastbound travel lanes are being closed between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday and no on-street parking is permitted. Violators will be towed. To minimize the impact on traffic, westbound travel lanes remain open to motorists.

Our guide in Penang, Malaysia, hopped onto our bus, introduced himself and said, “I am Sikh but as you see I do not wear a turban, I love beer and I enjoy spare ribs … I am a great disappointment to my mother.” Of course he got his laugh, but he also made his point. We could expect to be surprised.

Once upon a time (actually it was 1968, but it might as well have been once upon a time), my brand new husband and I traveled to Bermuda for our wedding trip. I wore the standard travel outfit: a dress and matching coat ensemble, white high heels, pastel gloves and a straw hat. My husband wore a sport coat; he carried his two favorite Swiss Army knives in his pocket and a fishing knife in his molded plastic carry-on.
