Consider the Yiddish word latke. It is what it sounds like, an onomatopoeic name for a flat, fried potato pancake consumed by Jewish people during Hanukkah.

Among the recent themes of forgiveness on Yom Kippur, the heartfelt and recently reexamined Stanford commencement address by Steve Jobs in 2005 and the New York Times article on education and teaching young people how to succeed through failure, I can’t help but look back on a specific life lesson that I have tried to convey to my own children.

For members of the Jewish community Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, is the holiest day of the year. From sunset, Sunday, Sept. 27, until after dark on Monday, Sept. 28, they will devote themselves to prayer, self-reflection and seeking reconciliation with God and one another.
