Starting early
Educators say literacy begins on the day you are born. With the objective to provide books to new mothers, as well as to expand the library in the Pediatric Division of South Nassau Communities Hospital, three eighth grade students at South Side MIddle School and Assistant Principal Rosemarie Cammarata held a book drive at the school. Each morning, they collected baby and children’s books. more
Sabrina Ameruoso holds Mia, the first baby born locally in 2010. Mia debuted at 7 pounds, 3 ounces, less than a minute into the new year.

Mia Ameruoso missed the dropping ball on New Year’s Eve by only 45 seconds. Sabrina and Frank Ameruoso of Valley Stream arrived at South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside around 11:45 p.m., and less than a minute after the new year began, the couple were celebrating the birth of a baby girl. more
