Hope and Joe Cohen, owners of Hope’s Land of Candy in Island Park, recently celebrated Purple Heart Day with Joe Ponte at their shop. The Cohens mark the day with a fundraiser for the Purple Heart Foundation and the Museum of American Armor.

Hope’s Land of Candy in Island Park celebrated Purple Heart Day Aug. 7 after the coronavirus pandemic prevented the 2020 edition of the event. Sea Cliff Museum reopens

It has been a long, hard road for the Sea Cliff Museum during the past year. Shut down virtually overnight in March 2020 when the Covid pandemic struck, the museum has been unable to fulfill one of its major functions in the community — welcoming visitors to interpretive displays and exhibitions detailing facets of local history. more

Encouraged by the interest of the singer Vanessa Williams, whose family ancestry is rooted deep in Oyster Bay, local researcher Claire Bellerjeau co-authored a recently published creative nonfiction book. It explores the life and times of Elizabeth, a.k.a. Liss, an African-American slave whose story is entwined with that the Townsend family, which once lived in what is now the hamlet’s Raynham Hall Museum. The book includes the sweep of events during the American Revolutionary War. more
