The celebration on Friday, Aug. 14, was bittersweet. After 44 years of working for the Village of Rockville Centre’s Recreation Department – and the last four as its superintendent – Ginger Creegan clocked out from her final shift, then attended a socially distant party in her honor in the center’s parking lot. About 50 people from various departments came to wish her well as she enters a new chapter and says goodbye to a career that, she said, she thoroughly enjoyed.

Isabella Verga believes in the importance of making a good first impression. The recent South Side High School graduate is also aware that, when it comes time to make that first impression on a job interview, some people do not have the means to dress for the occasion, and end up avoiding interviews as a result. To help remedy the situation, Verga, while working on her Gold Award for Girl Scouts, reached out to the John A. Anderson Recreation Center in Rockville Centre to create a way for people to access the appropriate attire, from head to toe, at no cost.

Things are getting quiet in Rockville Centre, at least in public. Schools are closed, meetings are postponed and most activities have come to a halt for at least the next couple of weeks. Though no cases of coronavirus have been reported in Rockville Centre, the village officials decided, “out of an abundance of caution” to close Village Hall, the Sandel Senior Center, John A. Anderson Recreation Center and Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center for two weeks, starting Monday, March 16 and reopening on March 30.

As more funds come in for an inclusive playground at the John A. Anderson Recreation Center, Mr. B’s Playground draws closer to a groundbreaking date. However, ground will not be broken until the village receives confirmation of a $500,000 grant from New York State, according to village spokeswoman Julie Scully.
