Five Mepham High School seniors were recently honored in the first group of 359 science students from across the country to receive Research Badges for their outstanding work in preparing reports for the prestigious Intel Science Talent Search, sponsored by the Society for Science & the Public. The students, all three-year participants in Mepham’s Authentic Science Research Program, are Nicole Altomare, Corryn Chaimowitz, Connor Garet, Masooma Kazmi and Corey Wald. more

At around 4 p.m. on Jan 9, Anson Wang, a senior at East Meadow High School, received the email he had been waiting for. It was from the Society for Science & the Public, notifying Wang that he had been named a semifinalist in the Intel Science Talent Search, a nationwide competition that aims to discover the country’s best and brightest young scientists, who present original research to nationally recognized scientists. more

Six Kennedy High School seniors recently competed in the prestigious Long Island Science & Engineering Fair, hoping to win one of 20 slots in the International Science & Engineering Fair, which began last Sunday in Pittsburgh. LISEF was held in two stages –– at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury in February, and at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Uniondale in March. All six Kennedy students, who were participants in the school’s three-year Authentic Science Research Program, were finalists in the competition. One of them, 18-year-old Brett Gossett of Bellmore, prevailed, winning a place at ISEF for a behavioral science project that he completed at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Hospital last summer. more

“I didn’t get much sleep last night because I was as nervous as the kids,” Herb Weiss, South Side High School’s science research facilitator, said about waiting for the results of the Siemens Math, Science & Technology competition, announced on Oct. 21. “I was thinking about who would win and who wouldn’t. It’s like being a parent to all the kids.” more

The annual Science Fair at South Side High School attracted a large number of participants this year and more than 600 projects were displayed, according to the school’s Science Research coordinator,Herb Weiss. more

The lab coats are taking over. This summer, more than a dozen students in South Side High School's science research program are interning both near and far in laboratories and universities. The high school will also be collaborating on botanical research with Hofstra University, to be completed in South Side's newly renovated greenhouse. more
