Many South Shore homeowners are breathing easier thanks to Governor Cuomo’s decision last week to use money from the N.Y. State Housing Recovery Program to compensate those whose homes were damaged by Hurricane Sandy, but whose flood insurance claims were rejected by FEMA because the damage had been caused by “earth movement” rather than directly by floodwaters.

Long-suffering Long Islanders may soon see some additional Hurricane Sandy relief from the federal government. A new program funded by Federal Supplemental Disaster Aid promises to bring nearly $150 million to the area, and will also feature a unique, bottom-up structure that will give residents influence over how the money is spent.
