Now that the dust has settled and many homeowners have found out if they are in or out of the high risk flood zone, I thought that it was time to express my thoughts on the proposed new flood maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Sadly, the maps discussed at the meeting at Village Hall on Jan. 2 have many inconsistencies.

It’s been a long and often bumpy road to get to this point, but Valley Streamers have finally gotten some closure on the flood zone issue with the release of revised maps three weeks ago by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Last week, many Valley Stream residents attended a public meeting that I, together with the members of the village board, hosted at Village Hall. The purpose of the meeting was to share information about the proposed new changes to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s flood maps that affect so many of us, and to give property owners the opportunity to learn what their current status is with regard to the new zones.

When the Federal Emergency Management Agency unveiled revised flood maps for Valley Stream two weeks ago, about 1,600 families breathed a sigh of relief. No longer would they be saddled with high insurance premiums, or diminished property values. About 1,000 homeowners, however, weren’t so lucky. They remain in the newly drawn flood zone.

More than 2,000 homes in Valley Stream are expected to be removed from the high-risk flood zone later this year based on new maps released during a meeting at Village Hall on Jan. 2.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is expected to host a meeting soon in Valley Stream to announce changes to the flood maps. The meeting is expected before the end of the year, however a date and location have not been set.
