Lynbrook resident celebrates 105 years
The year that Helen Gebhard was born, the United States began construction on the Panama Canal. The New York City subway system opened on October 27, and the first New Year’s Eve celebration was held in Times Square, then known as Longacre Square, in New York. On December 26, 2009, Gebhard celebrated her 105th birthday among friends and family at Sunrise of North Lynbrook on December 26, 2009. “I am crying, but I think they’re tears of joy,” she said. more

At a news conference last week, Lenny Rosado, left, joined by State Sen. Charles Fuschillo Jr., center, and Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, warned would-be drunk drivers that "the party's over" with Leandra's Law now in effect. The law was named for Leandra Rosado, Lenny's daughter, who died in an accident with a drunken driver last summer. Under the new statute, anyone who drives drunk with a child in the vehicle can be charged with a felony.

Charles Fuschillo Jr., a Republican from Merrick, Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, a Democrat from Long Beach, and Lenny Rosado were joined at a news conference last week by state and local officials to remind Long Islanders that Leandra's Law took effect on Friday, making drunken driving with a child a felony offense in New York. more
