Fifty fire departments and more than 1,000 volunteer firefighters throughout New York state are expected to compete in the annual New York State Championship Drill, which is being hosted by the West Hempstead and Hempstead Fire Departments and will take place Saturday, Aug. 19 at the Chief Brian Fahey Training Facility on Weir Street in Hempstead.

Two weeks ago, Chief Michael Vogt of the West Hempstead Fire Department had heard that his department was approved for a FEMA grant. “We knew we were approved for a grant, but we didn’t know how much or what it was for,” said Vogt. He soon found out, however, that the department would be receiving $228,572 to purchase much-needed self-contained breathing apparatus — known in the fire industry as SCBA. It is the largest grant ever received in the department’s history.

The Lakeview Fire Department held a wetdown on June 11 to welcome the newest addition to its fleet, a Rosenbauer Commander Engine, equipped with a 1500 gallon-per-minute pumper and a 750-gallon tank. The ceremony for the apparatus — Engine 414 — was attended by local clergy and elected officials, and followed by a barbecue and tours of the engine for all.
