David Knudson, of 2882 Dahlia Ave., was arrested for attempted murder in the second degree among other charges last night after punching and strangling a 32-year-old female victim, according to police. Knudson also placed a garbage bag over the victim’s head while choking her, police said.

Five Nassau County gun shop owners –– including an East Meadow resident who owns a shop in Merrick and a Bellmore resident who owns shops in New Hyde Park and Seaford –– have been arrested and charged with illegally selling assault weapons, Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced on Thursday. UPDATE: On April 19, 2012, all charges against Michael Marinello and South Shore Sportsman, Inc., were dismissed by Judge F. Ricigliano in First District Court, Nassau County.

The schools in the north of Baldwin were locked down briefly this afternoon as a precaution while police pursued suspects in the area. “The Brookside, Plaza, Lennox, Shubert, and Senior High Schools were locked down from approximately 12:45 until 2:00 this afternoon,” said District Spokesperson Cristina Schmohl.

Mounting financial responsibilities apparently drove postal worker Thomas Tang, a Baldwin resident, to devise a unique — and illegal — side business selling coupons on Internet auction sites. Tang, who lives on Wesley St. in Baldwin and worked for the U.S. Postal Service in the Corona section of Queens, was charged with stealing more than 7,000 coupons for the retail store JCPenney and selling them through his wife’s eBay account. According to investigators, Tang said his wife was unaware of his activities.
