Nearly 100 people turned out on Monday for a meeting of the Bellmore Preservation Group to plan opposition a proposed White Castle at St. Mark's Avenue and Sunrise Highway. Members of the group, which met at the Bellmore United Methodist Church, said they will to attend a Feb. 10 Town Board of Zoning Appeals hearing to stand against White Castle's request for a zoning variance.

Federal stimulus money allowed Bellmore-Merrick school districts to patch holes in their budgets caused by state aid cuts last spring, but that may not be the case entirely this year. In December, the cash-strapped state used part of its 2010-11 federal stimulus money to prevent midyear reductions in state aid for education in the current school year, said Matt Anderson, a state Budget Office spokesman.

Eileen Casazza says that White Castle is not what Bellmore residents crave.
Casazza, who heads the ad hoc Bellmore Preservation Group, is opposing the construction of a 24-hour White Castle fast-food restaurant at the corner of Sunrise Highway and St. Marks Avenue. Casazza said that she has a core group of seven to 10 residents fighting the proposed eatery, and as many as 70 people have attended meetings at the nearby Bellmore United Methodist Church, which also opposes it.
