The Nassau County record in the boys’ 50-yard freestyle had stood since 1982, long before any current high school student was even born. Austin Kowalsky, a senior at Mepham in North Bellmore, set out to change that this year, and handily did so with a time of 21.1 seconds, one-tenth of a second faster than the 30-year-old record.

With unforeseen savings from employees’ health insurance, four of the North Bellmore School District’s buildings might get expanded parking lots this coming fall. The proposition presented to the Board of Education at Thursday night’s meeting is meant to alleviate traffic flow problems associated with student drop-off and pick-ups, especially with increased enrollment at Saw Mill and Dinkelmeyer owing to the closing of Gunther School this June.

Sixth-graders at Martin Avenue Elementary School in North Bellmore recently turned out four performances of “Alice in Wonderland.” Students treated their parents and fellow classmates to a performance based on the Disney classic. The play was an adaptation of the movie as well as Lewis Carroll’s novels “The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland” and “Through the Looking Glass.”

Bellmore native Debbie Miller has traveled coast to coast on her musical journey, finding herself back in New York this month for the debut of her newest album, “Measures and Waits.” Currently living in Seattle, Miller will return home for the release of her second album at Rockwood Music Hall in Manhattan on March 31.

An 81-year old male pedestrian was struck by a car at about 6:40 a.m. on Sunday morning, Nassau County Police said. The unidentified pedestrian was hit by a 70-year-old male driving a 2005 Jeep Wrangler southbound on Bedford Avenue.

When Mepham High School sophomore Sabrina Mastrangelo, of Bellmore, captured the title of Miss Long Island Teen last August, it was only her second pageant. So she was more than a bit surprised when, in her third competition, she was named Miss Teen New York. Sabrina spent her early years in East Rockaway and attended Rhame Avenue Elementary school until the 5th grade.

Racial slurs insulting African-Americans were scrawled recently across billboard advertisements at the Bellmore Long Island Rail Road Station. The LIRR removed the vandalism early Monday evening, after alerted to the problem by the Bellmore Herald.

Current students at Gunther Elementary in North Bellmore will enroll at new schools in the fall because their school will close in June, and many parents felt that asking them to also figure out their own transportation was too much.
