The Kennedy High School girls’ soccer team came together on Sept. 17 in support of Children’s Cancer Awareness Month. After an early-morning practice, all 23 players met at Salon Envy in Merrick and purchased Streaks of Sunshine hair extensions, with proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Metro New York. The extensions are $10 each. more

The Basiles of Bellmore hosted about 20 Kennedy High School couples, who gathered to chat over food with their friends and classmates as parents snapped photos. Bellmorite Jamie Landau studied cupcakes while at Kennedy High School, from which the 17-year-old graduated with honors on Sunday. Landau, who will attend the College of William & Mary in Virginia in the fall, explored the shape and texture of cupcakes. She looked for nuances in the folds and swirls of their frosted tops. She even took a job at New York Cupcakery in Bellmore, in part to familiarize herself with their every detail. more

Kennedy High School junior Ross Shulman returned to the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education meeting last Wednesday to make his case that the district should eliminate substitute-teachers to save money and preserve full-time teaching positions. Instead of substitutes, Shulman advocated for a plan to use empty general-purpose rooms and cafeterias to house students under the direction of aides when their teachers are absent. more
Kennedy High School senior Darwin Shen spent last summer staring into a microscope at the New York University School of Medicine, counting hundreds of neurons encased in 20 slides of mouse brain tissue. His objective: Figure out whether immunogens injected into the mice before they died were able to stop the neural loss caused by Alzheimer’s disease. more
