Updated Oct. 4, 4:45 p.m. A pit bull that mauled 64-year-old Shashi Sharma last Thursday at the Brookside School in North Merrick, digging its teeth into her arms, legs and head, eluded capture as police closed in on the animal in North Merrick on Tuesday.

A special North Bellmore School District committee formed to address a state-mandated property tax cap met for the first time last week. The committee is chaired by Superintendent Arnold Goldstein, and includes administrators, teachers, parents and residents.
The North Bellmore School District takes in Park Avenue Elementary School, which is in North Merrick.

A friendly nurse at the orphanage in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, first demonstrated how she wanted Patricia and Wayne Resnick to feed 6-month-old Benjamin and Nadya. They had to rest the babies in their arms and spoon-feed potato soup to them. If the babies would not eat, they would not be allowed to leave the orphanage. That possibility worried the Resnicks, who had traveled more than 10,000 miles to adopt the children, stopping off in Moscow for a 13-hour layover along the way.

The Park Avenue Elementary School PTA is seeking new playground equipment for the school after being told one year ago by an insurance company that renovations had to be made to maintain playground safety. But the PTA’s request for county grant money has hit a yearlong stall as the money winds its way through the legislative process.

Call it a tale of two forests.
On the west side of the Meadowbrook Parkway, on the outskirts of Freeport and Roosevelt, there is the 73-acre Roosevelt Preserve, owned and maintained by Nassau County. There, the wide paths are clear of fallen trees and shrubbery and virtually trash-free. There is no evidence of campfires having burned down swaths of the woods, nor is there graffiti marring the abundant oaks and maples.
