The North Bellmore-North Merrick Little League Giants captured the 2011 boys’ 10- and 11-year-old International Division Championship by besting the Cardinals 9-8 on June 18 at the Gunther Elementary School field. The Calhoun Colts badminton team practiced throughout the 2010-11 school year while sporting T-shirts with the phrase, “Winning is a choice.” It’s a choice that the squad has made three years in a row. On May 20, the Lady Colts defeated Port Washington, winning four of seven games to capture the Nassau County championship. It marked the third consecutive county title for Calhoun, which the program had never accomplished before. more
The Bellmore-Merrick Basketball League recently honored its 2011 fifth-grade championship team. They might not know it, but members of the Jericho boys’ swim team have targets on their backs. The Bellmore-Merrick Sharks tied Jericho last season, and fell to the squad by two points in a meet this year. The Sharks now say they’re hoping for a different outcome the next time the two teams meet, at the county championships in February. They want to win. more

On Monday nights, community members and students from Mepham, Calhoun and Kennedy high schools flood Newbridge Arena in Bellmore to watch the undefeated 14-0 Bellmore-Merrick Bulldogs hockey team take the ice. As the Bulldog players, along with coach Chris Patten, scan the arena and acknowledge the ever-growing support from their loyal fan base, they know that the program has come a long way. more
