Louis Hernandez continues to dominate opponents on the wrestling mat. A junior at Mepham, Hernandez repeated as a Nassau County champion Feb. 12 when he defeated East Meadow’s Mike Tropiano, 22-5, in the 145-pound title bout at Hofstra, leading the Pirates to an impressive third-place finish in the team standings.

At its January meeting, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District Board of Education honored six members of the Central District girls’ swim team, the Sharks, for their outstanding performances at the county and state championship meets. They are Jessica Arana, Kerry Giovanniello, Jaimie Kaefer, Paige Kaplan, Gabrielle Toback and Liz Walsh.

The Bellmore BlueFire 14U fast-pitch softball squad played up into the 16U Division at the annual Triple Crown Summer Breeze Challenge at Stotsky Park in Riverhead on the weekend of July 6 to 8 and came away with the tournament’s championship crown, earning the squad a trip to the Triple Crown Nationals.

Mother Nature brought some rain to yesterday’s Long Island Class AA Baseball Championship at SUNY-Farmingdale and Calhoun senior Alex Vargas provided the thunder, booming a two-run double to the left field corner that capped the Colts' stunning three-run ninth inning comeback in a 6-5 win over Connetquot.

The Mepham High School varsity kickline team recently returned from the 2012 National Dance Alliance National Championship in Orlando, Fla., at which the squad placed second in the Small Varsity Jazz and third in the Large Varsity Pom divisions.

Calhoun High School wrestling alumnus Mac Maldarelli, who is finishing up his studies at Nassau Community College, took second place in his weight class at the National Junior College Athletic Association Men’s Wrestling Championship in Rochester, Minn., this past weekend, earning him the coveted title of All-American.

Mepham entered the Nassau County Division I Wrestling Championships at Hofstra University looking for its first individual champion since 2005. In a span of roughly 15 minutes last Sunday night, the Pirates had not one, but two wrestlers crowned.
