The East Rockaway Fire Department was called to a fire in progress at 200 Main Street Wednesday night. The three residents, one of whom called in the fire, were waiting outside of their home, all safe, when firemen arrived. The firefighters did, however, rescue a mother cat and her three kittens from the second floor of the home. Former East Rockaway Mayor Charles (“Charlie”) Formont died suddenly on October 21. Formont, who was known as Charlie, was a village trustee from 1987 to 1995 and served two terms as mayor from 1995 to 2003. A lifelong village resident, he was a member of the East Rockaway Fire Department and Rescue Squad for 49 years. more
