I’ve never met anyone who says, “I watch TV all day, and I especially love ‘The Real Housewives of New York City,’ ‘Jersey Shore’ and ‘The Biggest Loser.’ ” Most folks I know claim not to watch TV at all — not ever. Well, hardly ever.

Blaze on Main Street

The East Rockaway Fire Department was called to a fire in progress at 200 Main Street Wednesday night.
The three residents, one of whom called in the fire, were waiting outside of their home, all safe, when firemen arrived. The firefighters did, however, rescue a mother cat and her three kittens from the second floor of the home.
The blaze started on the first floor, according to Chief Ed Reicheter, and quickly travelled to the second floor.

Former East Rockaway Mayor Charles (“Charlie”) Formont died suddenly on October 21. Formont, who was known as Charlie, was a village trustee from 1987 to 1995 and served two terms as mayor from 1995 to 2003. A lifelong village resident, he was a member of the East Rockaway Fire Department and Rescue Squad for 49 years.

A driver lost control of her 2008 Ford Explorer just after 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, hitting two parked cars, crashing through a fence and knocking down two utility poles before coming to rest sideways on the Long Island Rail Road tracks just west of the Centre Avenue train station.

On a stiflingly hot and and sweltry afternoon last week, East Rockaway firefighters battled a mid-afternoon blaze on Second Avenue in East Rockaway. The fire was extinguished, a dog was rescued, and two firefighters were treated on the scene for heat exhaustion.
