It’s taken some time to get seven underclassmen into the mix for the Hewlett Lady Bulldogs on the lacrosse field, but one thing that’s been on point from the start is the offense. Led by senior low attack Emily Cohen and senior attack wing Sam DiSalvo, Hewlett has averaged 12 goals per game and there’s still room for growth.

Hewlett native Steven DeNapoli, who currently plays for the Major League Lacrosse team Rochester Rattlers, was invited to try out for Team USA that will play in the 2014 world championship in Denver. Tryouts are at Goucher College in Baltimore on Labor Day weekend.

Long Island has long been considered a lacrosse hotbed, churning out successful collegiate players from high school programs throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. I graduated from Lynbrook High School in 2010 and saw great players pass through the halls, cradling lacrosse sticks on their way to class. I remember wearing my friends’ home or away jerseys at big games. I enjoyed Lynbrook Lacrosse Day with the rest of my community.

Garden City’s engine was running on all cylinders against Hewlett in a Nassau Class B boys’ lacrosse playoff quarterfinal at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium on May 16. The defending county champion Trojans got five goals and four assists from Justin Guterding and let off the gas in the second half of a 12-3 victory.

For the second time in three games, Hewlett’s boys’ lacrosse team used some late heroics to earn a thrilling victory. Freshman Jared Strauss deflected a pass from junior Jimmy Anderson with a second remaining last Friday night to give the Bulldogs a wild 10-9 win over Bethpage.
