Talk about timeliness. Last week's column, "Responding to a Trio of Tragedies," was followed by three more incidents this week: a principal held hostage, resulting in his school going into lockdown; a 13-year-old boy committing suicide in the Bronx; and a report that two-thirds of all middle school students say they have been bullied. In each case, there was no outlet for rage. It is incumbent on us to prevent anger from escalating to that point. This week, I will examine a number of the anti-bullying programs that are proliferating in the schools, from the elementary to even the college levels. more
Senior captain Jalisa Barnes had 19 kills and five aces to lead the East Rockaway Lady Rocks to a 25-9, 25-22, 25-23 sweep of Hampton Bays in the Long Island Class C girls’ volleyball championship/Southeast Regional final at St. Joseph’s College last Saturday. more
As their latest fundraiser to raise money for the children of the East Rockaway school district, the East Rockaway Education Foundation announced that the “Harlem Wizards” basketball team will be bringing their exciting brand of “trick hoopz and alley oops” to the East Rockaway High School gymnasium on Sunday, Nov. 22, at 12:30 p.m. more
On November 8, the religious school at Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre held its annual Yad Program. The Yads — or Torah pointers — were designed and made by students of the the Hay class for use at their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. The Yads were created with the help of the Yad Squad, a team of dentists and artistic congregates who worked with the children and their parents. Thirty-two students participated this year. more
To observe Physical Disabilities Month, the entire student body of Lynbrook’s Marion Street School adopted the Bubba Fund, a not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to supporting programs that promote the growth and independence of physically challenged children. more
