A red Honda sedan came to a stop on Oct. 25 partway inside Jim-Jam Cleaners, at 1200 Merrick Ave in North Merrick, after crashing through the building’s front doors. One person inside Jim-Jam suffered a “minor injury” and declined medical assistance, a fire official said.

A ceremony Tuesday morning celebrated the start of construction on a Little Whaleneck Road house that the charity Building Homes for Heroes will give to Kevin Vaughan, a veteran of the War in Afghanistan, for free. Vaughan, who grew up in North Merrick, expressed many thanks to BHFH and the community, telling the crowd of about 150 people that it was “the greatest day of my life.”

Peter’s Clam Bar hosted a clam-eating contest on Sunday to benefit Long Island firehouses that were damaged by Superstorm Sandy. A total of 14 contestants from Island Park Fire Department, Oceanside Fire Department, Point Lookout-Lido Fire Department, Long Beach Fire Department, North Merrick Fire Department, and Baldwin Fire Department competed in the first part of the contest .
