Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg, of Merrick, the Merrick Fire Department and New York Blood Center will sponsor a blood drive from 4 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Merrick fire station, at 2300 Merrick Ave. Donors, who must have a valid ID, weigh at least 110 pounds, be between 16 and 76 years old and not have gotten a tattoo in the last year, will receive two free tickets to a New York Mets game.

The Merrick Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call for downed power wires in the early morning hours of Jan. 31. The wires were sparking and burning in the front yard of a home at Frankel Boulevard and Arthur Avenue. Firefighters waited at the scene for a Long Island Power Authority repair crew to arrive and turn the electric off. The volunteers stayed to prevent fire from breaking out and spreading.
