Amid the “for rent signs” and boarded up shop windows that line Grand Avenue in Baldwin, the Sweet and Savory Café sticks out. The quaint coffee shop, nestled between a pub and an abandoned store, is draped in light blue and cream curtains and table cloths, welcoming coffee-lovers from all over Long Island. The café’s menu blend of sweetened chocolate and cinnamon coffees mixed in with savory lunch plates, such as barbeque chicken and fontina bowls, keeps customers scratching their heads but always coming back for more. The curvy lettering of the front sign catches the eye and for many people driving down Grand Avenue, it’s a rare sight. Some passerby’s even get out of their cars to take a better look. more

Two of Baldwin’s most prominent acronymic organizations — the Civic Association, or BCA, and the Chamber of Commerce, or BCC — combined forces last week on their largest-scale joint project to date. Although the two groups have paired up on several ventures in the past, and often find their interests dovetailed, last week’s Cash Mob promotion marked the official start of what everyone hopes will be a beautiful friendship. more
Welcome Back! I hope everyone had a great holiday and remembered to patronize our local businesses. Our last Chamber meeting was held at Sonny’s Canal house and was our annual “Thank You” lunch. This was our chance to thank all of the businesses and residents who have helped the Chamber throughout the year. more
The Baldwin Chamber of Commerce once again pulled out all the stops to bring Baldwin a joyous holiday celebration over the weekend. Cheerleading, pony rides, choral performances and reminders to “shop Baldwin first” characterized the well-attended event, and crowds enjoyed hot cider and donuts. Around 5 in the afternoon Santa and Mrs. Claus even made an appearance. The jolly couple rode in astride a vintage Baldwin Fire Truck and helped the crowd light the tree with their special Christmas magic. more
