Behind Bayville Village Hall there is an oasis, or at least many in the community see it that way. At the end of a roughly 100-foot trail through the woods, there is a fenced-in area surrounding an ice rink that was once a popular spot among residents. But because it has not been maintained in years, the rink is littered with frozen leaves and branches, and the trail has become a snarl of logs from fallen trees.

Although the traditional options of disposal ensured that the drugs would not fall into the wrong hands, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has found that aquatic life can be adversely affected, as well as that of humans.

Ten months ago, Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued the stay-at-home order that would leave the dining rooms of restaurants empty and familiarize residents with food served in to-go boxes rather than on their favorite eateries’ plates. Some restaurants were forced to close, including the popular Canterbury’s Oyster Bar & Grill in Oyster Bay.

Philip Baker was ecstatic, perhaps more so than the average guy, his mother, Chris, said. The Bayvillite was turning 50 on Jan. 17, a milestone for someone with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome. The rare disorder, which only affects men, causes neurological and behavioral abnormalities and the overproduction of uric acid in the body. Years ago, doctors told Chris and her husband, Philip W. Baker, that their son would die before he reached age 12. No one ever thought Philip would live to see 50.
