There are plenty of nice homes in Valley Stream. Homes with neat front lawns, bay windows and maybe even porch swings. But the question many residents are asking since the Federal Emergency Management Agency introduced its new flood maps in September 2009 is: What is my home actually worth?

2012 is an important year for Valley Stream residents living in the high-risk flood zone. It’s the last year in which homeowners can renew their flood insurance for a reduced rate before annual premiums spike back up to four figures.

Thankfully, Irene has passed through Valley Stream, hopefully without too much damage and devastation. One thing that did not happen is that there was no flooding in Gibson, where the new flood maps were effective in September 2009. Gibson Boulevard did not even have a puddle, much less a storm surge going to 11 feet, 4 inches.

Judging by the number of homes in Gibson and the south side of Valley Stream with their garbage on the curb on July 5, I was not the only one unaware that there was no pickup on July 5, the day after the holiday.

Local officials are trying to resolve the flood map situation in Valley Stream, they stressed at a town hall-style meeting last Thursday night at Village Hall. More than 50 residents came heard from Assemblyman Brian Curran, who hosted the meeting, along with Mayor Ed Fare, Town Councilman Jim Darcy and representatives of federal officials.
