There are people in the Valley Stream and neighboring communities who do good deeds each day, not for recognition or praise, but because it’s the right thing to do. Many of these people go unrecognized — not that they mind — but the Valley Stream Presbyterian Church wanted to make sure a few of them received some attention at a recent gathering.

If you were part of the massive crowd that attended the Valley Stream Community Fest on Sept. 29, you probably noticed a few things: a host of business and community groups up and down Rockaway Avenue, a store or two that you didn’t know too much about, a lot of neighbors and friends, and the lovely weather.

On any given day, Rockaway Avenue sees its fair share of action, with people from all over Long Island coming to the Valley Stream business district to shop and dine. But this Saturday looks to be one of the most eventful days in the avenue’s history, when it will be the site of the long-awaited Valley Stream Community Fest.

Thank you to the Valley Stream Herald for covering our committee’s work toward putting together a day of community right here on Rockaway Avenue (“The minds behind the Community Fest,” Sept. 6-12). The people involved in putting the Fest together, and those participating in the event, are truly committed to making Saturday, Sept. 29 a great day for Valley Stream.

On Sept. 29, Rockaway Avenue will be shut down from Sunrise Highway to Merrick Road for the first-ever Valley Stream Community Fest. Several business owners and residents, who meet every two weeks, are organizing the event.

The way people live their lives has changed in recent years and you can thank (or curse) technology for that. Sure televisions are now paper thin and a GPS can get you around a traffic jam, but one of the biggest advancements in technology in the past decade has been the growth of social media.

In reference to the Herald’s article of June 7-13, “Stream project to alleviate flooding,” I commend the village board for seeking out and being awarded a federal grant for stream improvements. Focusing on removing debris and sand will certainly improve the flow of water and alleviate flooding.

Members of Envision Valley Stream discussed cleaning up streets, parks and waterways, creating a teen center and ways to cut down on excess telephone poles at their meeting on May 31 at Sip This on Rockaway Avenue.
