As one of the largest incorporated villages in the state, Valley Stream does not have a shortage of people who enjoy doing good things for their community. Many of those people were out in full force over the last week, picking up litter, planting trees and making Valley Stream a better place.

Valley Stream residents will be seeing some new additions and subtractions at the intersection of Merrick Road and Cottage Street in the coming months. A medical office is replacing the New York Golf Center location, Valley Stream Bicycle Center is moving to Lynbrook and a 7-Eleven convenience store will be replacing the Blockbuster Video store.

Though Valley Stream’s dog park is still likely a few months from opening, the facility is starting to take shape along a grassy strip by Village Hall. Though some had hopes for a fall opening, it now looks like the park’s debut will be in the spring.

Valley Stream artist Mike Stanko was once inspired to paint by the two vending machines at Firemen’s Field, he said. Whether he was stricken by the beauty of the red lights of the Coca-Cola dispenser against snow-covered baseball diamonds or the grilled cheese sandwich he had for lunch, Stanko said he loves to share his paintings and prints that are influenced by his hometown.

According to representatives of the Planning Division of the Nassau County Department of Public Works, Valley Stream is faced with similar problems related to economic development as other Long Island communities — its population is aging, some properties are vacant and residents have questions about the meaning of affordable housing. But Senior Planner Sean Sallie said the numbers show that Valley Streamers have a lot to build on.
