With coach Jim Ferry, of Merrick, at the helm, the Long Island University Blackbirds basketball team defeated Robert Morris University on March 7 to win the Northeast Conference championship. With the victory, the team qualified for the NCAA “March Madness” tournament for the second straight year.

With the lights dimmed in the auditorium at Kennedy High School in Bellmore, students chanted the well-known ESPN SportsCenter theme song. The buzz was electric as more than 200 students, faculty members, parents and alumni eagerly awaited the arrival of ESPN broadcasters, and Kennedy alumni, Steve Levy and Adam Schefter.

With tears in his eyes, Marine Cpl. Kevin Vaughan waved to the several hundred supporters who arrived in North Merrick to welcome him home on March 9. Driven by his father, Jim, to his driveway on Winifred Drive, Vaughan watched as his neighbors, friends and well-wishers waved American flags and brandished signs to give him a hero’s welcome during a parade that was organized by the Wenshaw Park Civic Association.

Third-graders at Old Mill Road Elementary School in North Merrick gathered at the front entrance of the school, eagerly awaiting the arrival of Olympic figure skating gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi on Wednesday afternoon. When Yamaguchi, 40, entered the school minutes later, she was met by an exuberant greeting from the students to welcome her.

Adam Rubin, a sports journalist who graduated from Mepham High School in North Bellmore, is now in Port St. Lucie, Fla., covering the Mets’ spring training for the 10th consecutive year. Rubin will be there until April, when he’ll follow the Mets home as they begin the regular season.
