Already displeased with the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s decision last December to close the K-8 Sacred Heart School in North Merrick at the end of the school year, Sacred Heart parents have now become vocal about the diocese’s decision not to offer severance pay to faculty members who are losing their jobs.

Dozens of walkers recently took part in the annual Bellmore-Merrick Relay for Life, a walk-a-thon fundraiser that raises money to support the American Cancer Society’s research, education and advocacy efforts.
The event was held at Merrick Road Park, next to the Norman J. Levy Park and Preserve.

Calhoun High School may be full of model students, but on one recent evening, the school was full of student models.
On that Thursday, Calhoun turned on its spotlights on a fashion show to benefit Invisible Children, a nonprofit organization that works to spread awareness about Ugandan militant Joseph Kony and his rebel group, the Lord’s Resistance Army.

Three seats up are up for grabs between five candidates in this year’s Merrick School District Board of Education election. Of the candidates, Susan Schwartz and Nancy Kaplan are seeking reelection, and challengers Dr. Pamela Banks, Segal Negrin and Eric Strezenec are vying for their first term on the board.
The three candidates who earn the most votes in this at-large election will each win a three-year term on the board. The vote will take place Tuesday, May 15, from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Levy-Lakeside Elementary School.
