The World Series Championship in the A Division of the Merrick-North Merrick Little League was played recently at Birch Elementary School in Merrick, and the Twins edged out the Yankees 2-1.

Alexa Fronte, a fourth-grader at Old Mill Road Elementary School in North Merrick, is among the winners in the 11th annual Child Abuse Prevention Services Bully Prevention Poster and Poetry Contest. More than 1,500 students from 57 Long Island schools submitted entries to the competition. The winning 12 posters and three poems will be featured in the 2010-11 CAPS School Year Calendar, to be distributed this fall.

A few hours after Landon Donovan scored a last-minute goal at the World Cup in South Africa to advance the United States to Round of 16, the Shore Road School fifth-grade Student Council hosted its own charity soccer shootout. Created by fifth-grader Robert Romeo, students donated money to compete in shootouts held during their physical-education classes.

More than 60 Wilson Elementary School second graders recently completed a walking tour of the village with stops that included Sky Athletic Club, Chase Bank, ARTrageous Studio and finally, The Phillips House on Hempstead Ave. At the Phillips House — which is also known as The Museum of Rockville Centre — trustees gave the students and their teachers a guided tour of the home and explained the importance of the furnishings and artifacts in the house in regard to the early days of Rockville Centre.

The two columns of gray T-shirted, sweat-drenched runners you may see hustling across the sand on a Town of Hempstead beach early next month will not be the Marines, but rather the town's rookie lifeguards, being drilled by Training Officer Andrew Rinn. For two weeks Rinn will beat the teenagers down and build them back up, in the ocean and out, weeding out quitters, building a team. He'll be the one in a lifeguard uniform, though looking, frankly, with his shoulder-length black hair, more like Russell Brand's athletic older brother than a beach captain.
