Nassau County Legislator Dave Denenberg, of Merrick, the Merrick Fire Department and New York Blood Center will sponsor a blood drive from 4 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, at the Merrick fire station, at 2300 Merrick Ave. Donors, who must have a valid ID, weigh at least 110 pounds, be between 16 and 76 years old and not have gotten a tattoo in the last year, will receive two free tickets to a New York Mets game.

The Merrick Volunteer Fire Department responded to a call for downed power wires in the early morning hours of Jan. 31. The wires were sparking and burning in the front yard of a home at Frankel Boulevard and Arthur Avenue. Firefighters waited at the scene for a Long Island Power Authority repair crew to arrive and turn the electric off. The volunteers stayed to prevent fire from breaking out and spreading.

At 6 p.m. on Oct. 28 –– one day before Hurricane Sandy whipped across the tristate area, causing billions of dollars in damage –– Michael Gargan, first assistant chief of the Merrick Fire Department, ordered his volunteers to their respective firehouses. They would sleep at their stations, hoping the storm would blow over but ready to respond to a call at a moment’s notice.
The next morning, the volunteers quickly realized that Sandy would be no average storm, no mistake by the weather forecasters, who were predicting that this would be the Big One.

With a cold rain falling in Merrick last Sunday afternoon, the weather outside was frightful. Still, local folks flocked to the Merrick Fire Department’s annual Christmas tree and wreath sale at Empire Hose Company No. 3 on Merrick Avenue, across from the Merrick Library.

With its raging floodwaters and fierce winds that gusted up to 85 miles per hour, Hurricane Sandy severely tested the Merrick Fire Department, but according to department spokesman Ron Luparello, Merrick’s bravest weathered the storm, aiding countless residents as they struggled to stay afloat in what many described as the “storm of the century.”

The Merrick Fire Department is expecting thousands of mourners at a wake at Empire Hose Company for slain Nassau County police officer Arthur Lopez of Babylon Village, who was gunned down on Tuesday morning in Queens after he pulled over an ex-convict who had served time for attempted murder and drug sale.
